The Ashmolean Museum of Art & Archaeology is the oldest public museum in the UK, and part of the University of Oxford. It was founded in 1683 by Elias Ashmole, a lawyer. The Tradescant family collected the works as well as being gardeners to the Royalty. The Museum contains an amazing collection of works from all over the world; crossing continents and time. Exhibits are from Ancient Egypt , Minoan Crete, Anglo Saxon treasures to modern Chinese Art and Pre Raphaelites and much more. It is a superb collection of works ranging from coins, statues, paintings, prints and ceramics.

Sarah Duncan (Artist and LSAG member) will tour for around one hour and discuss works from the Western Modern Art section which contains works from Hepworth to Picasso, Pissarro and Sickert etc. After Sarah’s talk people can then explore the huge variety of works in the museum as they wish.

There is also a book and pay exhibition called “Colour Revolution” if wanted, which is a fascinating and well curated study of Victorian art ,fashion and design showing that the Victorians were not as monochrome as often depicted. Of particular interest is the impact of chemical dyes on fashion ,and clothes of the period are exhibited including a dress that belonged to Queen Victoria.

NOTE – this exhibition closes on 18th February. Full price tickets are around £15. A suggested time slot to book would be after 14:30 / 15:00.

The Ashmolean Museum is in Beaumont Street, and near to St John’s College and Worcester college at the other end of the street which also has the Oxford Playhouse. Balliol College leads on to Broad Street, and the Sheldonian Theatre and the Radcliffe Camera . Also the Covered Market from the 1700’s. An interesting and beautiful walk if time permits.

The museum has 2 small lifts and stairs.
